Decarbonizing the built environment: Building codes and capacity building for implementation and enforcement

8 Dec

14:30-15:15 GST

The built environment, responsible for nearly half of global greenhouse gas emissions, stands in a pivotal arena for deploying low-carbon solutions. U.S. Department of Commerce Under Secretary Marisa Lago will kick off the session highlighting key recent initiatives, including the publication of the Green Building Code of Pakistan, a project supported by the International Trade Administration’s Market Development Cooperator Program, followed by the presentation of the ICC Global Award to the Pakistan Engineering Council, by the International Code Council. A panel discussion then will delve into the transformative potential of designing, constructing and operating buildings utilizing the latest technologies, as well as building codes, and the particular challenges faced by emerging economies in building the capacity to do this successfully. The discussion will share best practices, lessons learned, and insights on expanding partnerships to empower other countries in enhancing building resilience and sustainability, fostering a global shift towards more energy-efficient and climate-resilient infrastructure.
