Buildings and Construction for Sustainable Cities: New Key Partnerships for Decarbonisation, Adaptation and Resilience

6 Dec

12:30-14:15 GST

The launch of the Buildings Breakthrough, Cement Breakthrough and the Forest and Climate Leader’s Partnership’s (FCLP) Greening Construction with Sustainable Wood initiative is pivotal in accelerating systems transformation in the buildings and construction sector. The aim of these frameworks is to unlock intergovernmental and multi-level collaboration as a solution for mitigation, climate change adaptation and resilience in the sector. The sector (scope 1 & 2 energy & F-gas, and scope 3 building materials) accounts for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO2 emissions and 50% of extracted materials and is responsible for one third of global waste. Moreover, the effects of climate change are increasingly causing severe impacts on buildings. The sector’s fragmentation requires a coordinated response from National Governments to guide the direction and pace of the transformation. These frameworks offer a platform for international cooperation to unlock rapid transformation.
