Interest in voluntary carbon markets is rising rapidly in the GCC. But voluntary carbon markets alone will not be sufficient to achieve climate policy goals. Reducing GHG emissions fast enough to attain net zero targets by 2050 will also require compliance carbon markets. Several initiatives at the national and local level are establishing the necessary ecosystem for a possible compliance market to be developed in the UAE in the future.
